At Aquent, we pair marketing and design specialists with challenging jobs to create inspired, productive partnerships. Partnerships that produce meaningful work for our client companies and the talent we represent.
That said, we’re more than a talent placement company. We’re a world-leading innovator in improving the way companies, and talent, work. From pioneering benefits for project-focused designers and marketers, to creating solutions to help companies test-drive talent before hiring them, to building a worldwide network of subject matter specialists who understand the special needs of marketing niches globally and the world’s increased need for specialized talent. Both permanently placed talent and project-based talent.
So what’s the next big thing in marketing and design?
It’s a growing workforce we call independent professionals—the most skilled, specialized, highly motivated marketers and designers in the world. Marketers and designers trading full-time jobs for greater challenges anywhere they can direct their passions. Marketers and designers developing working relationships with select companies around the globe. They are workers who know that real security these days means staying at the top of their game, not working their way to the top of a company. They energize. They inspire. They transform marketing.
Join us as we constantly search for new ways to help companies and workers learn from each other. Where inspired marketing and design flourishes. Where the world works smarter. Where everyone works and lives a little happier.

Ann Webster
President, North America -
- Close bio
Ann Webster began her career with Aquent by helping to establish a MacTemps office in Seattle back in 1990. “At that time, new markets were kept on a pretty short leash,” she explains, “We couldn’t even buy a water cooler for the office until we had 25 people out working!”
Ann’s passion and commitment to growing the business quickly became apparent. She successfully lobbied for a Windows machine (we were MAC-Temps, after all), so that she could begin placing talent at Microsoft (which she did) and the rapidly growing demand for Windows savvy talent. Recognizing the need for multimedia talent in the Seattle area, she set about recruiting and placing them, eventually launching a sub-brand, Montage, which specialized in CD-ROM and multimedia experts. Soon she was adding other brands to the market – Portfolio, Webstaff, 1-800-NETWORK – and expanding her business into Oregon by opening an office in Portland. By 1997, revenue for Ann’s markets were growing at a rate of 20% a year.
Making the most of Ann’s effective leadership skills and keen business sense, she was soon asked to manage Aquent’s entire Western Region, which included all the major cities from Seattle to San Diego. Within three years she had nearly doubled the region’s revenue from and tripled its operating profit.
After additionally assuming responsibility for Aquent’s Canadian offices and overseeing two multi-million dollar acquisitions, Ann was appointed president of Aquent’s North America business in 2006. Ann has flourished in her role as president, growing the profitability of this business by 25%, and continually inspiring people with her strong work ethic, pragmatism, and thoughtful humanity.
Ann has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Northern Arizona University. She currently lives in Boston, MA.

John Chuang
Co-Founder and CEO -
- Close bio
“In 1986, when I was a junior at Harvard College, two classmates and I started a desktop publishing business in our dorm room,” says John Chuang, Aquent’s CEO and co-founder.
“In the early days, our company was not idea-driven but friend-driven,” Chuang explains, “That is, it existed as a vehicle for friends to spend time together. At that stage it was fine (and in fact fun) to try a series of random ideas. Our company, by design, was flexible enough to keep changing until something worked.”
When that desktop publishing company, Laser Designs, morphed into MacTemps, a temp agency focused on placing desktop publishers who knew how to use a Mac, the friends had indeed found something that worked. In fact, that company, which changed its name to Aquent in 1999, grew into a $500 million global staffing firm.
John has been listed in the Boston Business Journal's "40 Under 40" and Transpacific magazine's "Top 10 Under 40" and "100 Great Asian-American Entrepreneurs." In 2002, Over the course of his career he has also been recognized as New England’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst and Young, a “High Tech All Star,” by Mass High Tech, and was a finalist for the Harvard Business School Club of New York’s “America’s Entrepreneur Award, 2000.”
John has written op-ed pieces for Inc., the Boston Globe, Harvard Business Review, the Boston Business Journal, and Staffing Industry Report. He has served as president of the Massachusetts Association of Staffing Services and as a board member for the American Staffing Association, AIGA, and the Recycling Advisory Committee for the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He currently sits on the board for Angie's List, a consumer advocacy network, and for CareerSoft.
John earned a bachelor's degree cum laude from Harvard College in 1987 and an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School in 1992, while serving as the company’s chief executive officer.

Mia Wenjen
Co-Founder Director -
- Close bio
"In the early days, we would hire a kid just graduating from college, hand them a key and say, ‘You’re opening the Orange County office,’" says Mia Wenjen. She’s describing the free-wheeling approach to expansion that she and Aquent’s co-founders, John Chuang and Steve Kapner took as their budding business spread across the US and then the world.
For her part, Mia launched the West Coast operations and grew the Los Angeles market into one of the company’s largest. Possessed of the same entrepreneurial spirit that has driven Aquent from the outset, Mia went on to oversee the Boston market, manage an internal start-up aimed at the temporary placement of accountants, and serve as publisher of 1099 Magazine, the off-line version of Aquent’s cheeky webzine for independent professionals, 1099.com.
Mia graduated from Harvard College cum laude in history and science in 1987 and earned an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management in 1993.

Steve Kapner
Co-Founder and Managing Director -
- Close bio
When Steve Kapner showed up at college, little did he expect that random freshman rooming assignments would be the beginning of a decades-long business partnership. As it turned out, his roommate was John Chuang and downstairs lived Mia Wenjen. Together the three of them launched a desktop publishing business from their dorm room that eventually grew into the $500 million global enterprise known today as Aquent.
Steve’s roles at Aquent have run the gamut since those early days when everyone basically had to do everything. Over the years he has served as CFO, head of training and development, general manager of an internal technology start-up, and president of both Creative and IT staffing operations. Today, Steve is based out of Aquent’s Tokyo office where he’s busy on a number of global projects.
Outside of Aquent Steve has managed venture capital investments for Harvard and worked as a consultant for the Boston Consulting Group. He is chairman of the Aspire Group, Aquent’s staffing business for security-cleared personnel, and serves as a board member for Angie's List, a consumer advocacy network.
Steve earned an AB cum laude from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Three little-known facts about him: He has co-hosted a weekly radio talk show, trained on an amphibious assault ship with the US Navy, and once had Tom Peters ask him for advice.
You can contact Steve at stevekapner@aquent.com.
